Laboratory-area cleaning protocol

When you need this form

Laboratories sit outside a normal cleaning round. Benches may be off limits, some waste streams are not yours to touch, and access often depends on a lab manager clearing the space first. A campus contract that spans teaching rooms, labs and accommodation needs a separate protocol for the lab areas, with the hazards for that room identified before anyone starts. Universities expect the cleaner to show their people were briefed on those hazards, every time.

Restricted areas invite questions. A lab manager wants to know who entered, when, and what was and was not touched. A live record answers all three without a phone call, and the photo of the finished floor or the emptied general waste bin settles the rest. Word documents cannot show the room was left as the protocol required.

What good looks like

• Room identified with its access conditions and the hazards briefed before entry.
• Exclusion zones honoured: benches, fume cupboards and sharps left to lab staff.
• Only approved products used on lab floors and non-bench surfaces.
• Consumables checked and restocked: hand wash, paper, general waste liners.
• Authorised sign-off from the cleaner, with photos of the finished area.
